Obituary of Mary L. Hargrave

HARGRAVE, Mary L. Age 84 of Horseheads, NY passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center after a brief illness. Mary, predeceased by her husband, Louis A. Hargrave, father, Luther Washington, mother, Tisby Hamm Washington. Mary’s survivors, left to cherish her love, are one daughter, the Rev. Doris Washington-Cole, one sister, Lillie Mae Young, one grandson, Sidney D. Moore (wife Chanda), four grandchildren, Antonio (active duty), Sidney Jr., Laetitia, and LeeAnaca Moore, five godchildren, Angie McArthur (Minneapolis MN ), Beverlie Jones (Little Rock AR), Tonya Newman (Charlotte NC), Kendra Speed Seller (Charlotte NC), Timothy Hannah (Rochester NY), and a host of nieces, nephews, and relatives. Mary is a New York State retiree, Division Aide at South Lansing juvenile detention center; Elmira Psychiatric Center. Mary was a long time member of Monumental Baptist Church, among three of the first women ordained as Deacon; she was the first appointed, ordained Head Mother of the church, the first to organize a gospel quartet known as the Emeralds, and she served 20 years above as President of the Missionary board at Monumental Baptist Church.. Mary was a life member of the Elmira/Corning branch NACCP. Mary’s life interest she pursued with pleasure, in which gravitated many folks into her kitchen, was the delicious taste of her famous fried chicken and sweet potato pies. Family and friends are invited to visit Monumental Baptist, 308- 310 E. Clinton St., Elmira on Tuesday, June 7th from 6 to 8 pm. Her funeral service will be held at New Day Ministries, 900 W. Water St., Elmira on Wednesday, June 8th at 11 am. Rev. Corey Cooke will officiate.
