Obituary of Nathaniel Nelson

NELSON, Nathaniel "Alonzo" Age 80 of Elmira, NY. He was born January 19, 1937 in Charleston, SC, son of the late Cornelius and Josephine (Porter) Nelson and passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at Corning Center for Rehab & Healthcare. He was preceded in death by his brother Neil Nelson and his sisters, Virginia Nelson, Sofia Nelson, Bertha Nelson, and Mae Louise Small. He is survived by his daughter, Tuwanna Trimble of Elmira; grandchildren, Maurice Williams, Shanice Williams, Michael Brown; great grandson, Javier Williams; brothers, George Nelson of Canton, OH, and Joe Singleton of Columbus, OH; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Nathaniel was a long time member of Monumental Baptist Church, attending for over 40 years. He served many positions in the church, working as an usher and driving the church bus for services and events; Nathaniel also served as a vice chairman on the Trustee Board for a number of years and was Past President of the Men's Club. After two years serving his country in the Army alongside his brothers, Nathaniel worked at the A & P Plant until it's closing, and then moved on to work in construction until his retirement. He will be remembered as a family man, taking his daughter to visit relatives and enjoying their trips together. Family and friends are invited to visit Monumental Baptist Church, 308 East Clinton St., in Elmira on Wednesday, February, 1, 2017 from 10 am to 12 noon. Nathaniel's funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm. Rev. Corey Cooke Sr., Celebrant. Committal and interment to follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.
