Obituary of Lyle A. Smith

SMITH, Lyle A., Jr. "Junior" age 68 of Elmira, NY. He was born May 7, 1948 in Elmira, the son of Lyle A., Sr. and Betty (Teri) Smith and passed away Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at home after a brief illness. He was predeceased by his father Lyle A. Smith, Sr. and son-in-law, Matthew Renner. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Carolyn (Antenore) Smith; daughter Jessica Renner of Horseheads; son and daughter-in-law Justin and Susanna Smith of Elmira; grandchildren Jackson Renner, Connor, Paige and Owen Smith; mother Betty Burnside of Horseheads; brother and sister-in-law Fred and Beverly Smith of Gillett, PA; sister and brother-in-law Teri and Carlo Masia of Pine City; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Roe and Ron Cantando of Elmira along with several nieces and nephews. Junior was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Parish. He retired from the Elmira Correctional Facility after 34 years as a Corrections Officer; was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Vietnam; a member of the Chemung Rod and Gun Club and the Vietnam Veterans of America #803. He loved to hunt and fish; was an avid antiquer, card player and Dallas Cowboys fan and enjoyed spending summers at Seneca Lake. At Lyle's request there will be no prior calling hours. Family and friends are invited to his Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, February 6th at 9:30 am in Ss. Peter & Paul Church. Rev. Scott Kubinski, Celebrant. Committal prayers and interment, with military honors, will follow in St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. A time of sharing and luncheon will follow at Regale, 2447 Corning Rd. (Miracle Mile), Horseheads, all are welcome. Lyle's family thanks Dr. Bradley Lash, the Oncology team and 5 Main staff at Robert Packer Hospital; a special thanks to CareFirst, the blue team especially Kate, Heidi, Angie, Iva and Anastasia for their compassionate care of Lyle; Kindred at Home, most especially Anteleen; and our caring and devoted family and friends especially Roe and Ron Cantando.
