Obituary of Walter Jenkins

JENKINS, Walter Age 82 of Horseheads, NY and formerly of Queens, NY. He was born June 14, 1934 in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late Paul and Mary (Henley) Jenkins. Walter passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2017. He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Howell Jenkins. They were married for 64 years before she went home to the Lord in 2014. Walter is also predeceased by his daughter, Irene Jenkins Kemp; son, Walter Jenkins Jr.; and sister, Fay Lambert Bradley. He is survived by his daughter, Shirley Jenkins Coleman of Elmira; brothers, Alfred Jenkins of Charleston, SC and Edward Lambert of Laurelton, Queens, NY; sisters, Pauline Henley Wilson and Josephine Henley, both of Queens, NY, along with a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Walter attended George Westinghouse High School and was soon after drafted into the Army. He served two years of active duty service followed by four years active in the Reserve. Walter took on many challenges in his life. He always worked very hard and was eager to learn. Through his life Walter worked for a jewelry company where he made and repaired watches, as a machine operator and mechanic for "Variety Trimmings" as well as taking many opportunities for side jobs including a short time working for Delta Airlines. Finally, Walter retired from The New York City Housing Authority. Walter enjoyed many hobbies including fishing, crabbing, and taking care of his beautiful fish tanks. He was a music lover who loved dancing and greatly enjoyed trips to the beach with his family. Family and friends are invited to visit Walter J. Kent Funeral Home, 858 Lake St. at Washington Ave., Elmira on Tuesday February 21st from 11 am to 12 noon. Walter's funeral service will be held at 12 noon. Rev. Gerald Glover will officiate. Committal prayers and interment will immediately follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.
