Obituary of Barbara Ann Shock

SHOCK, Barbara Ann (Sawyer) age 77 of Elmira, NY passed away Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. She was born to Merle Edward and Betty Mae (Kern) Sawyer, on November 17, 1942 in Sayre, PA. and raised in Elmira, NY. Her parents predeceased her in 1982 and 2020, respectively. She married her longtime husband, Leonard, in 1963 who preceded her in death in 2018. Barbara is survived by her son Anthony Wayne Shock of Elmira; daughter and son-in-law Dawn Marie and Howard Harding of Lockwood; sisters and brothers, Bertha E. (Richard) Holton, Jean M. Sawyer-Smith, William E. Sawyer, and Donald R. Bennett (brother-in-law). Grandchildren, Zachary Shock, Lynsie Hunter Reeder, Alisen Noel Harding and Kelsie Jordan Truitt; great grandchildren Kaiden Shock, Addyson Reeder, Paislie June Reeder and Rowan Harding Sample, and soon to be born, baby girl Truitt; along with several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by sister Merle L. Bennett in 2016, sister-in-law Lisa M. Sawyer and brother-in-law Roger G. Smith. For many years, Barbara enjoyed working at I.D. Booth in Elmira, where she made many friends. Barbara was a friend to many, a mother figure to those in need, and a pet-mom. Barbara was loved by all who knew her. Barbara was spunky and often presented a tough exterior, but underneath she was very loving, and beloved, much like her father. You were always a welcome visitor, and within minutes you'd have a cup of coffee in your hands, if desired. We are fortunate to have many great pictures, despite her reluctance to pose. Barbara was a true matriarch to her children and and grandchildren. Besides family and friends, her biggest passion was car racing. She volunteered at many a Nascar race, and would watch multiple races at the same on TV; meeting Paul Newman, and other drivers was a highlight. And, from a young age she was a fan of Elvis Presley; whom may have even inspired her love of dancing, winning many dance contests, as a teenager. In deference to the current pandemic, a memorial service will be held at a later date, in 2021, to be announced here, and on Facebook. Until then, we ask friends and family to share your thoughts, favorite remembrances and pictures about Barbara, below; for which the family would be grateful.
