Age 93, was born March 1, 1932 in Lindley, NY the daughter of the late Howard and Edna (Robinson) Swarthout. She was ushered home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at Bethany Manor where she most recently resided. Shirley was preceded in death by all of her siblings: Stanley & Irene Swarthout, Howard & Beverly Swarthout Jr., Berneece & Michael Egleston and Duane Swarthout. Survivors left to cherish Shirley's memory are her nieces who cared for her, Rose Anne (James) Swarthout and Carol Coolbaugh; special friends, Joyce Racine, Barb Gilliam and Velma Kelly; along with several other nieces, nephews and many friends. Shirley was a faithful member of the former Pentecostal Tabernacle and Elmira Christian Center. She retired from the Walter Hoving Home in Garrison, NY after many dedicated years of service as their Director of Rehabilitation. She was a mother figure to the many girls whose lives she affected. Shirley had a wonderful personality. She was kind, compassionate, generous, sincere and had a wonderful sense of humor. Family and friends are invited to visit the Walter J. Kent Funeral Home 858 Lake St. at Washington Ave. Elmira on Monday May 19, 2025 from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Shirley's Funeral Service will follow with Pastor Matthew Bedzyk officiating. She will be laid to rest with her parents in the Elmwood Cemetery Caton, NY at the convenience of her family.
