Lena M. Corsaro Obituary

Lena M. Corsaro

Age 96 of Elmira Heights, NY. She was born July 16, 1929 in Dunkirk, NY, daughter of the late Thomas and Mildred (Zappie) Genovese and passed away Friday, July 18, 2025 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband John, of 69 years, in 2019; brother Peter Genovese; sisters Rachel Zelko and Fannie Bonyak. She is survived by her children and their spouses John & Eileen of CO, Dan & Teri of Pine City, Patti & Mike Rohde of Horseheads, Tony & Debbie of Deland, FL, Millie Corsaro of Elmira Heights; grandchildren Timothy (Shelley), Joleigh (Pat) Hennessy, Camilla (Drew) , Dominic (Lindsay) Corsaro, Danielle (Joe Hayden) & Angelina (Griffen) Baxter, Heather (Will) Sebra, Kyle (Cassie) Rohde, Kristen (Andrew) Brusso and Nicole (Ben) Georgia; great grandchildren Eily and Emilia Hennessy, Dexter, Jack and Cooper Sebra, Johnathan and Cameron Brusso and Sevi Rose Georgia and Jolene Corsaro; brother-in-law William Zelko along with many nieces and nephews. Lena was a communicant of St. Charles Borromeo Church, which she loved dearly and a member of their Altar and Rosary Society. She retired from Cohen School as the longtime lunch moderator and when she retired, she was presented a crown and the title of "Lunch Queen". She always had extra money for the kids who forgot their lunch money, needed lunch money or for ones who wanted ice cream. No kid went without. Along with Adel Jividen, Lena founded the Elmira Heights Cinderella Softball League where she served as President and on the board for 30 years. Initially there were only 3 teams and they ran the concession stand out of a car trunk. In the beginning, they played at Lenox School which is all they could afford. No benches to sit on. In time, they moved to McCann's Blvd behind the boy's field. After the league was well established, they needed more room and moved to the fields behind the Elmira Heights Fire Station. She was the heart and soul of the Elmira Heights Cinderella Softball and without her, there would be no softball in Elmira Heights. She coached and was very involved for many years, leading to a softball field being named for her. She loved the game and she loved the kids. Family and friends are invited to visit St. Mary's Church, 224 Franklin St., Elmira on Thursday, July 24th from 10 to 11 am. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am. Committal prayers and interment will follow in St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. Her family thanks the staff of the Chemung County Nursing Facility for the wonderful care they provided her.
