Bert Amos Corwin
Age 89, passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2025 at his home. He was born December 7, 1935 in Caton, NY, the son of the late Amos and Alma (Stickler) Corwin. Bert was preceded in death by his wife, Connie M. (Eldred) Corwin, sister Patricia (Corwin) Brimmer, son Bret A. Corwin, and two grandsons, Gurdon Thaddeus (Teddy) Mills, IV and Gordon Timothy (Timmy) Mills. Bert grew up on a farm in Lindley, NY. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1958, as a structural and crash rescue firefighter. After his military service, Bert worked as a machinist for nearly a decade at Kennedy Valve in Elmira, NY. Following that, he became a Delivery Engineer for Ward LaFrance in Elmira Heights, NY. He loved traveling and meeting new people, as he delivered fire trucks across the nation and explained their features. After Ward LaFrance closed in 1979, Bert worked as a truck driver for Flickinger's Wholesale Distributing, Herr Trucking, and Quality Foods. Bert had a love of good jokes and stories. Growing up on a dairy farm, he was very proud that he knew the difference between which end of a cow mooed and which end pooed. He was known to tell long detailed accounts of his time in the service, riding rodeo in South Dakota, getting a speeding ticket on a bicycle in England, delivering firetrucks to Los Angeles County, and being a truck road warrior. At least 10% of every story Bert told was true. Bert is survived by his former wife Nora Arlene (Elston) Robinson, sons Bert N. Corwin and Bart A. Corwin, daughter Bufi N. (Corwin) Mills (Ted), daughter-in-law, Hope (Tice) Corwin, stepsons Lance R. Christman and Eric J. Christman, stepdaughters Jennifer L. Christman and April M. (Christman) Coleman; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the dedicated medical staff at the Bath VA and the wonderful Home Health Aides of Family Services of Chemung County. Their kind and caring services made Bert's last years of life some of his best. Family and friends are invited to attend Graveside Services on Wednesday, September 24, 2025 at the Woodlawn National Cemetery 1825 Davis Street Elmira at 2:00 pm. The Chemung County Honor Guard will accord Mr. Corwin with Military Honors. The Walter J. Kent Funeral Home is assisting the Corwin family.
