Obituary of Josephine M. Matera

Josephine (Jo) Matera Age 97, of 918 Magee St, Elmira, NY passed away peacefully on October 24, 2025. She was born on July 7, 1928 and was predeceased by her beloved parents, Vincent and Mary (Monitello) Matera, and by her siblings, Victoria (John) Caccia and Michael (Emma) Matera. She is survived by many nieces and nephews including Carol (William) McKenzie, Colleen Larrison (Mike), Michael (Tina) Matera, and Michelle (Dean) Charles. The next generation…Brian (Jennifer) McKenzie, Leslie Moriarty, Sarah Matera, Katelyn Matera, Emily Matera, and David Larrison. She was also particularly close to her great-great nieces and nephew Lucie, Annie, Josie and Louie. The family would like to thank Theresa Tiberia for all the friendship, care and love she provided to Jo and Deborah Donovan for her support over the past several months. Jo was a lifelong Elmira resident and a dedicated employee of Chemung Canal Trust Company, where she worked for many years. Jo was a communicant of the Parish of the Most Holy Name of Jesus (St. Anthony's Church) and found comfort and community in her faith. She loved to travel, was an avid New York Yankees fan, and her culinary skills rivaled any 5-star chef in the world. Family and friends are invited to attend her graveside service at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery on Monday, November 3rd at 1 p.m. with Rev. Richard Farrell officiating. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may remember Jo through contributions in her name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
