Mariann Lou Moran Obituary
Mariann Lou Moran (Horner), age 86 of Amherst, Massachusetts passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 7, 2025 surrounded by her family at her home in Elmira, NY. Mariann was predeceased by her parents, David and Velma Horner, her brother, Lee Horner, and her beloved husband of 52 years, Robert "Bob" Moran. Mariann is survived by her son, Lee M. Moran (Jennifer Smith), grandchildren, Jeffrey, Megan, and Molly Moran, lifelong friend and "sister" Dorothy Lewis, as well as other extended family members from the Moran side. Mariann was born in May 1939, prematurely in her uncle's house, who was the town's dentist, just off the town square in Amherst, MA, she was then rushed to the hospital where she was nicknamed "peanut." That is how Mariann entered this world, "small but mighty." She lived in several locations, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York, as her father was a Westinghouse executive. She graduated from Horseheads High School in 1957 and then attended Endicott Junior College in Beverly, Massachusetts, where she obtained her degree in 1959. She began her work life in the office at WELM radio. During this time she met her lifelong partner and husband, Bob, who worked at the rival station WENY. They were introduced to each other by none other than Steve Christy. Her final career was working as a library aide in the Elmira City School District, and also served her community as a long-time election inspector. Family and faith were the cornerstones of her life. Much of her life was spent actively volunteering in her son's scouting, youth group, and school community. Mariann wholeheartedly loved her grandchildren and attended every school concert, play, and sporting event. She was a long-time active member of the Westside United Methodist Church, where she sat on committees, taught Sunday School, and coordinated church dinners. Small but mighty Mariann was a 25+ year colorectal cancer survivor, and was an avid participant in the Relay for Life Organization. Mariann enjoyed traveling with Bob across the United States to visit National Parks, frequent trips down to New York City to see the newest shows on Broadway and Radio City, or returning to her roots and visiting family in Amherst and Fort Wayne, Indiana. She will be fondly remembered by many who knew her New England quick wit and sarcasm, as well as her determination, compassion, and devotion to those she loved. It was always Mariann's wish to remain in her home and this was only possible due to the compassion and loving care from her wonderful aides Lisa, Liz, and Destiny that made those wishes possible. Family and Friends are invited to visit Westside United Methodist Church 743 West First Street Elmira, NY on Saturday, December 13, 2025 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Her funeral service will be held there following the visitation at 3 pm. Pastor Robert Briggs will officiate. Repass will follow in the church hall. Mariann will be laid to rest with her beloved Bob in the Wildwood Cemetery Amherst, MA at the convenience of her family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Jeffrey's baseball league in memory of Mariann to Challenger League 455 Maple Avenue Elmira, NY 14904. Walter J. Kent Funeral Home is assisting the Moran family.
