Maureen Bernas and I met our Junior Year in France- she stayed in the same big stone house in Tours during orientation, and we went on several excursions together- the one I remember best was Carnac. She had wanted to see the dolmens of Ireland so badly...but toward the end of the year none of us had very much spending money. We did have Francerail passes, though, and Brittany has the best dolmens and Celtic stone configurations on Earth. So we stayed in hostels and ate very little, and we saw them together. Her enthusiasm for every piece of good luck and serendipity was infectious. I haven't seen her since the 2000s- before her disability, and a wonderful conversation afterwards, when she explained that the incident had cured her depression even when it injured her body. I had a dream of her October 1, 2024 sitting at a Catholic camp retreat table in a kitchen after we'd listened to a concert, and she was well and happy. But I also know I miss her here. I lost most of my photos of France in a flood, but I have these two, both taken in the Loire valley with our hostess and her dog (that dog and Maureen were absolute besties). Much love and solace to the people who loved her.

I've been trying to find Miss. Bernas for years. She was my french teacher at Keshequa Central School in Nunda, NY over a decade ago (around 2001). I'll never forget her kind nature and sweet heart. I saved a note she gave me on her last day of school with us. My heart was broken when she left... I'm so sad to hear that she has passed. If a family member or friend could contact me so I can give my condolences I would be forever grateful. I don't know if she ever knew how much she meant to me, and how she influenced me to become who I am now. I wish I could have told her myself.

Oh , I am just seeing this, and crying sad tears to realize that Maureen is gone, though I know her loving kind joyous spirit is still with us. She was my friend when we did our junior year in France. I went to a college on the west coast, so when we came home, I never got to see her again. Over the years we messaged and spoke on the phone, where she told me about her excitement to move to Bloomington, and later about her struggles. She was an absolute joy when she could focus on the people and places she loved. I’m sad to hear this, and I remember her so fondly, even though I last saw her in 1992. My thoughts are with her loved ones.
