Obituary of Vernon Eugene Tolbert

TOLBERT, Vernon Eugene Age 83 of Horseheads, NY. He was born January 23, 1934 in Elmira, son of the late Jesse and Josephine (Ketchum) Tolbert and passed away Wednesday, October 4, 2017. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Alton, Giles and Melvin; sister-in-law Sharon Tolbert. Vern is survived by 3 sons, numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews; brothers and sisters-in-law Irving "Dutch" & Rose Tolbert of Horseheads, Frank & Shirley Tolbert of Remsen, NY, Diane Tolbert of Colorado Springs, CO. Vern retired from Southern Tier Sheet Metal Workers Union #112, Elmira as a skilled sheet metal worker "tin knocker" after a career spanning more than 35 years. He graduated from EFA, Class of '52; was a U.S. Marine and a member of the Marine Corp League, American Legion, Catholic War Veterans, VFW and a longtime member of the Chemung County Veterans Honor Guard along with other service and fraternal organizations. Family and friends are invited to visit Walter J. Kent Funeral Home, 858 Lake St. at Washington Ave., Elmira on Wednesday, October 11th from11 am to 1 pm. His funeral service will be held there at 1 pm. Committal prayers, military honors and interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
