Obituary of John Arthur Moore

Age 82, of Elmira, NY, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 3, 2024. John was born on July 28, 1941 in Newark, NJ to the late Catherine (Givens) and James Moore, Sr. He was first married to Donna Moore. They had three children together; Tyrone, Larry and Toni. He then married Ocie Wilson-Moore. They had 1 child; Michael Wilson. John worked at American LaFrance in Elmira, and was later employed at the Elmira Correction Facility until he retired in 2002. He was a member of Monumental Baptist Church, where he at one time served as an Usher. He played basketball for Mount Nebo Lodge in Elmira, and earned a cooking certificate at the Neighborhood House. John loved good music, good food, and his NY Giants. He always enjoyed a great debate. John was predeceased by his wife Ocie Moore, his sisters Wilhelmina Williams, Gwendolyn Pruitt, Coretha Bruce, his brother James Moore, Jr., and his best friend King Watkins Sr. He is survived by his sister, Sara Moore, his children Tyrone Moore, Larry Moore, Toni Moore and Michael Wilson, and his very special grandson Zaiar Wilson, along with a host of relatives and friends. Family and friends are invited to visit Monumental Baptist Church a Reflection Remnant Church, 1009 Maple Ave., Elmira on Friday, March 15, 2024 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. Going home services for John will be held at 12 noon. Rev. Corey Cooke will officiate. Committal prayers and interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery where the NYSDOC Honor Guard will accord Mr. Moore with honors. Repast to follow at Queen City Lodge, 726 Benjamin St. Elmira, NY 14901. Walter J. Kent Funeral Home is assisting the Moore family.
