Obituary of Norman C. Adams

ADAMS, Norman Age 87 of Horseheads, NY went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, December 5, 2020. He was born August 23, 1933 in Elmira, NY, son of the late Albert and Leona (Thompson) Adams. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings Phyllis Mood, Lyle Adams and Alice Thorn. He is survived by his brother Cliff Adams of Royal Palm Beach, FL, several nieces and nephews, lifelong dear friend and caregiver Mary Anne Smith of Elmira Heights and his cat Geronimo. Norm was a longtime member of Birchwood Baptist Church which later became Hillcrest Baptist Church where he served the Lord as a trustee, a Sunday School teacher and a Boy's Brigade leader. He helped pick up children on the Sunday School van and operated the sound system for over 50 years. He graduated from Horseheads High School in 1952. In service to his country, Norm was a veteran of the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1959, stationed in Germany. He retired from Westinghouse Corp. with many years of service. In his younger years, Norm enjoyed working at a veterinary practice with Doc Stephen and was in a bowling league. He enjoyed sports, especially baseball: the NY Mets and Toronto Blue Jays, and hockey: the Montreal Canadiens. He was a counselor and taught archery at Nellie Beidelman's Youth Camp on Harris Hill. He enjoyed being an outdoorsman, gardener and was a hunter. He raised prize winning dahlia's as a member and Senior Judge of the American Dahlia Society: Southern Tier and Rochester chapters, and was a maple syrup producer with his friend Bill. He was a test grower of various roses and had a green thumb when it came to plants, including the fruit trees in his yard. Norm was also a Reading Buddy at Watkins Glen Elementary School, helping second graders and kindergarteners for several years. He enjoyed going to the Finger Lakes Produce Auction in Penn Yan and supporting the 4H children at the Bath Fair. He liked antique cars, especially with his good friend Harold and totally enjoyed watching airplanes in the sky. His greatest thrill was when he flew on the Concorde out of Syracuse and later sailed on the QE II. Though he did not have TV channels, he watched his favorite program, Hogan's Heroes, on DVD's.
