Christie, Rev. Melvin D.
Age 80, of Elmira, NY went to be with his father in heaven Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012 while at home surrounded by family. He was born June 27, 1932 to Mamie Christie. He was pre-deceased by his mother, brother, Theodore Christie, and sister, Anne Ruth Christie Brown. He is survived by his nieces Cathy E. Christie-Johnson of Bay Point, Calif. and Carmen M. Christie Fitch of Elmira (both of whom he raised as his own daughters), Aunt Louise Ellis, of Elmira, God-son Matthew Molina and special daughter Tammy Heath, both of Elmira. He is also survived by many family members and friends. The Rev. Christie was pastor of Ship of Zion Holiness Church located in the church room in his home. His death is a tremendous loss to humanity and to our family, but his legacy lives on in all those he touched. He was a kind, generous, loving soft-spoken man who lived an exemplary life. He was truly a Christian man. He practiced what he preached. He sheltered, clothed, fed and gave money to those in need and respected everyone, especially children. His home and yard was a playground for at least six generations of children who he referred to as "my kids." Funeral arrangements are being handled by Walter Kent Funeral Home, Elmira. Family and friends are invited to gather from 9:30-11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 24, 2012 at Word of Faith Church, 356 W. Thurston St., Elmira, with funeral services held there at 11 a.m. Burial at Woodlawn Cemetery.
