Obituary of Michael Sky

SKY, Michael (Slowikowskyj) Age 86 of Horseheads, NY. He was born August 26, 1927 in Ukraine, son of the late Mykola and Justyna (Lagoyda) Slowikowskyj and passed away Saturday, August 31, 2013 in Brockport, NY. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Anna Podolczuk Sky; children, Irena (Robert) Oyer of Holley, NY, Donald (Patricia) Sky of Orlando, FL, Maria (Gary) Roach of Asheville, NC, Pauline (Phillip) Johnson of Four Oaks, NC and Annamaria (Thomas) Huddas of N. Palm Beach, FL; grandchildren, Donald, Jr. (Julie) Sky of Orlando, FL, Katrina (Adam) Tinkous of Brockport, NY, Brittany (Matthew) Lackovic of Asheville, NC, Nicholas Johnson of Four Oaks, NC, Thomas II, Alexander and Max Huddas all of N. Palm Beach, FL; great grandsons, Brady and Andrew Tinkous both of Brockport, NY; sisters, Kateryna Lazoryshyn of Ukraine, Pauline Klymochko, Stephany Wowkowych and Ann Bilous all of Rochester, NY; brother, Ivan Slowikowsky of Toronto, Ontario, along with many nieces and nephews. Mike arrived in the USA on August 1, 1950, settling in Rochester, NY helping new immigrants acclimate to America by teaching driving and helping fill out job applications until he bought a dairy farm in 1960 in Greenwood, NY. He worked odd jobs while farming, including driving school bus at Greenwood Central for 18 years. In 1982 Mike and Anna settled in the Elmira area and worked at the Ukrainian resort Soyuzivka in Kerhonkson, NY from where he retired in 1997. Mike was involved with his churches as Cantor and Choir Director at St. Josaphat in Rochester, at Christ the King in Bath, NY, at St. Nicholas in Elmira Heights and in Kerhonkson and Soyuzivka. He loved his family and family get togethers. He was a friend to many and will be missed by all. Family and friends are invited to visit Walter J. Kent Funeral Home, 858 Lake St. at Washington Ave., Elmira on Thursday, September 5th from 4 to 7 pm. Panikhyda will be held at 7 pm. Prayers will be offered there on Friday, September 6th at 12:30 pm followed by Divine Liturgy at 1 pm in St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 410 E. McCann's Blvd., Elmira Heights. Committal prayers and interment will follow in St. Nicholas Cemetery.
