Age 66, of Elmira, NY, passed away on October 9, 2023. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Rebecca Whitman of Boston, MA; sister, Barbara Whitman of Elmira, NY; brother, Scott (Dana) Whitman of Elmira, NY; nephews, Zachary (Danielle) Baldwin and Joel (Stephanie) Whitman; niece, Linzee (Steve) Payne all of Elmira, NY; cousin, Donald Whitman and Glen Allen of Virginia; as well as several great nieces and nephews. Doug also leaves behind his special canine companion, "Sally", and dear friend, Liz Hunter, who was a tremendous help to Doug and his family over the past few years. Doug was predeceased by his parents, Edward E. and Carole S. (Epley) Whitman; uncles, Arthur Whitman and Richard Whitman; cousin, David Whitman. Doug was born in Elmira on July 29, 1957 and graduated from Southside High School. He proudly served in United States Navy and would often recount stories of his naval adventures. Doug's happy place was on Seneca Lake in Watkins Glen, NY. He spent the summers of his youth helping his father work on his 30-foot Chris Craft wooden cruiser. In recent years Doug enjoyed relaxing with "Sally" on his own boat on Seneca Lake. On or off the water Doug could be found listening to classic rock-n-roll often playing along on one of his guitars. When the weather grew colder, he was content to delve into his extensive movie collection. Doug will be missed , especially by his great niece, Nellie, who always brought a smile to his face. Family and friends are invited to gather at Woodlawn National Cemetery 1825 Davis St. Elmira, NY on Monday, October 23, 2023 at 2pm for committal prayers and where the Chemung County Honor Guard will accord Military Honors for Mr. Whitman.
