Lou Atkinson
Lester Lewis Atkinson, Jr., age 76 of Horseheads, NY. He was born November 9, 1948 in Binghamton, NY, son of the late Lester Lewis Atkinson, Sr. and Marjorie (Cole) Atkinson and passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2025 unexpectedly. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Christine Margaret Atkinson; father-in-law and mother-in-law Charles and Irene Speen, and brother-in-law Dennis Speen. Lou is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Maryanna; children and their spouses Christina and Jim Sarosy of Cicero, NY, Melanie and Phil Metzger of Guilderland, NY, David and Amber Atkinson of Baldwinsville, NY; grandchildren Gehrig Sarosy of Long Island, NY, Holden Sarosy of Potsdam, NY, Danica Sarosy of Cicero, NY, Maggie & Charles Metzger of Guilderland, NY, Gage, Asher & Parker Rae Atkinson of Baldwinsville, NY; brother and sister-in-law Thomas and Jody Atkinson of Peoria, AZ; brother-in-law and sister-in-law William and Jeanne Speen of Valencia, PA along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. Lou was a communicant of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church. He retired from Corning, Inc., was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp; former member of the American Legion and the Catholic War Veterans, both in Elmira Heights and a member of the Knights of Columbus and a pierogi worker at St. Nicholas Church. Growing up, Lou and his family attended Elmwood Ave, Baptist Church. Family and friends are invited to visit Walter J. Kent Funeral Home, 858 Lake St. at Washington Ave., Elmira on Sunday, January 26th from 3 to 5 pm. Parastas will be held at 5 pm. Prayer will be offered at the funeral home on Monday, January 27th at 10:30 am followed by his Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am in St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church. Rev. Teodor Czabala, Celebrant. Committal prayers and interment, with military honors, will follow in St. Nicholas Cemetery.
