Obituary of Charles H. Slater

SLATER, Charles H. Age 73 of Elmira, NY. He was born September 28, 1941 in Elmira, son of the late Claude E. and Jane Christine (Miller) Slater and passed away Monday, December 29, 2014 at St. Joseph's Hospital after an extended illness. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Agnes Webster. Chuck is survived by his wife Gloria; sons Charles Wheeler (Suzette) of Elmira, NY and Jason Slater (Ashton) of Syracuse, NY; stepsons Ralph (Lynette) Nichols and Fred (Becky) Nichols; daughters Doreen (Ed) Miller of Tucson, AZ; Patricia (Chad) Reeves of Wilmington, NC, Robin White (Bill) of Owego, NY, Kari Wheeler (fianc Bill White) and Tammy Martin (Jim) both of Elmira, NY; 2 favorite nieces Ellen Benjamin and Mandy Meck; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Chuck was a former employee of Corning, Inc., Jack's Taxi (dispatcher), Glider City Cab, Arnot Ogden Medical Center where he formed the Arnot Credit Union and was the president. He retired as a security officer from Schweizer Aircraft and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during Vietnam. Mr. Slater was past commander of VFW Post 901, commander of the Chemung County Emergency Protective Force, Ex officer for the Auxiliary Police and Elmira Emergency Assistance Force under John Ellison; 1st vice commander of American Legion Post 443 under Charlie Trumble. He also held other positions in the VFW. He was a charter member and past secretary of the Vietnam Veteran of America Chapter 803. For his service in the Vietnam War, Chuck was awarded the Purple Heart. Family and friends are invited to visit Walter J. Kent Funeral Home, 858 Lake St. at Washington Ave., Elmira on Sunday, January 4th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. His funeral service will be held there on Monday, January 5th at 12 noon. Committal prayers and interment, with military honors, will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.
