Obituary of Gary M. Bernhardt

BERNHARDT, Gary M. Age 82 of Big Flats, NY. He was born December 5, 1935 in Cleveland, OH, son of the late Guy Mannering and Genevieve (Williams) Bernhardt and passed away Friday, September 7, 2018 at St. Joseph's Hospital. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister Allison Carmen and brother Allan Bernhardt. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Adrienne (Strathearn) Bernhardt; his five children, Eric, Heather (John), Karl (Susana), Hans and Krysta (David) as well as many grandchildren. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh where he earned a degree in Electrical Engineering. He was employed for many years with Westinghouse Corp. and retired from Corning, Inc. Gary was a dedicated, loving husband, father and grandfather who built his family's home. He was a giving citizen, and loved his community. He will be greatly missed. As an active member of the community, he served the Lions Club of Big Flats, was a many gallon donor and volunteer for the Red Cross, sang for over 20 years with the Chorus of the Southern Finger Lakes and proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserve. The Lions Club was his passion and embodied his core values of charity and always giving something back to your community. Gary served as the sound engineer for many church and community events including The Youth Talent Showcase. He was an avid stamp collector, and supporter of local arts, music and theater. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of his family with burial in Rural Home Cemetery, Big Flats. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may remember Gary through donations to the Big Flats Lions Club, 18 Algonquin Dr., Horseheads, NY 14845.
