Obituary of Nancy Ann Kent

Nancy A. Kent, EdD, RN, NP Professor Emerita, University of Rochester School of Nursing Died February 23, 2013, age 82, formerly Sister Joseph Clare of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Rochester. Nancy Kent was raised in Elmira, NY, the eldest daughter of Clyde and Anna Kent, who predeceased her. She is survived by her loving sisters: Nora (Bob) Manchester and Mary (Paul) Zubriski of Pine City, NY, and Marjorie (Mike) Johnston of Odessa, NY, several nieces and nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces, close friends Aloyse Hahn, Margaret Briody (Rick Muir), and Jeanne Downs as well as her beloved dog "Daffy". Nancy graduated from Elmira Catholic High School in 1948 and St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing, Elmira, in 1953. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Rochester in 1967, a Master of Science in Nursing from The Catholic University of America in 1969, and a Doctor of Education in Educational Administration from the University of Rochester in 1988. Professor Kent was a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nurses, and Kappa Delta Pi National Honor Society in Education. She earned a certificate as an American Nurses' Association Adult Nurse Practitioner, and was awarded fellowships as a University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business Johnson & Johnson Fellow, and U.S. Public Health Service Faculty Fellow. Nancy practiced nursing in Elmira, NY, Selma, AL, and Washington, DC, as Staff Nurse, Head Nurse, Supervisor, and Clinical Specialist. As Clinician at Strong Memorial Hospital, she led the Experimental Unit trialing new approaches to patient care. At the University of Rochester School of Nursing, she held positions of Instructor, Assistant Professor, Clinician II, Family Nurse Practitioner, Projects Director of Medical Center Nursing, Clinical Chief for Medical Nursing, Chair of the Medical/Surgical Educational Program, and Associate Professor. In addition, Nancy conducted nursing and educational research, was a published author, presented professional papers, and belonged to several nursing organizations. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 17, 2013, at 10:00 AM at St. Peter and Paul's Church, Elmira, NY. This will be a celebration of Nancy's life and a remembrance of the difference she made in so many lives. Donations may be made in her memory to St. Joseph's Neighborhood Center, 417 South Avenue, Rochester, NY 14620. Nancy Kent will be lovingly remembered as a caring family member and treasured friend who was proud of her Irish heritage. She will be greatly missed! Walter J. Kent Funeral Home is assisting
