Obituary of Shirley N. Root

ROOT, Shirley N. (West) Age 94 of Horseheads, NY. She was born April 19, 1925 in Elmira, daughter of the late Emmett and Ruth (Merrick) Schoonover and passed away Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Bethany Manor. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husbands Richard J. West and Cecil T. Root; son David R. West and son-in-law Kenneth Matthews. Shirley is survived by her children and their spouses Steven and Deborah West of Southport, Joseph and Karen West of Elmira Heights, Thomas and Linda Root of Elmira, Bonnie Root Matthews of Bloomsburg, PA, Cathy Root-Wood of Wellsburg, Heather (Root) and Paul Hrynkiw of Elmira Heights and Scott Root of Erin, daughter-in-law Nancy West of Painted Post; 30 grandchildren; 55 great grandchildren; 13 great, great grandchildren. Shirley was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved her bird feeder (squirrel feeder), flowers and music. Family and friends are invited to visit Walter J. Kent Funeral Home, 858 Lake St. at Washington Ave., Elmira on Wednesday, February 5th from 4 to 6 pm. Her funeral service will follow at 6 pm. Chaplain Mary Ann Bernard will officiate. Interment will take place in Nelson Cemetery, Nelson, PA at the convenience of the family.
