Obituary of Daniel H. Backus

BACKUS, Daniel H. Age 70 of Elmira, NY. He was born March 1, 1944 in Elmira, the only child of the late Percy and Mary (Brown) Backus and passed away Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at the Robert Packer Hospital after a brief illness. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Sue; children Sulane (Holt) Blackford of NH, Jeff Backus and Greg Backus, both of Elmira; grandchildren Alexi, Ashlee, Summer, Kristian and Steviey. Dan retired this year after 35 years as a dedicated employee of Central Recycling Co-op. He visited 49 states while employed with American LaFrance delivering fire trucks. He was a member and past chief of the West Hill Fire Department. Dan was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving in Vietnam. Dan enjoyed his family, friends and neighbors, his home and all sports. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. A memorial headstone will be erected in Woodlawn National Cemetery in honor of Dan's service to our country.
