At his funeral I expect someone to say, "He was a great man". But what defines a, "Great man"?
Father?
Army veteran?
Kind?
Friend?
Brother?
Son?
At what cost does such a label come? Does a label given to him after his death require all the labels given to him in his life? And even then, are there certain labels required to earn, "Great man"?
I think that label is earned by the longing to earn it. You can't achieve greatness without first yearning for it.
From what i've heard after my father's death, he wanted so much more than got. He wanted to be a great man. He wanted success and happiness. He wanted a life that could be written into a New York Times Best Seller. I think it's a shame he was cheated of such a life. You only live once and I think that the way he lived isn't the way an innocent man such as him deserved.
I've been told that he lives on in my name. He lives on in our hearts and our memories. But at what cost? Why does he have to die so he can live on? That makes no sense! I miss my father and I wish he could live on in real life so he can become the great man he always wanted to be. After all, he truly was a great man.

With sincere condolences to the Gilboy family.
We went to school together in the Heights and he certainly was one of the nicest guys in our grade, the "class of 1983"
Rest peacefully, Jimmy.
